Pharmacists may administer Zostavax without a prescription for some patients starting today

The Council for Ohio Health Care Advocacy “COHCA”  is happy to announce that starting May 22, 2014 Ohio pharmacists will be able to administer Zostavax (herpes zoster vaccine) to patients without a prescription if they meet the following requirements.

The patient must meet the age criteria specified in the FDA approved labeling.   According to the FDA, Zostavax is a live attenuated virus vaccine indicated for prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) in individuals 50 years of age and older.

House Bill 483 amended to include COHCA requested amendments

House Bill 483, one of a package of midterm budget review bills offered by Governor John Kasich, was amended Wednesday with language requested by the Council of Ohio Health Care Advocacy (COHCA).

The amendment reinstates a requirement in Ohio statute that the director of the Ohio Board of Pharmacy to be an Ohio licensed pharmacist. COHCA collaborated with the Ohio Pharmacists Association in an effort to make this change.
